I just checked how much money I made on Hubpages.com for the month of June, and it was just shy of $50 (so far this July, I’m on track to make about the same as in June). The earnings were from Google Adsense and the eBay Partner Network (I don’t promote Amazon’s Affiliate Program on Hubpages to any great extent right now). I know $50 isn’t a lot of money, but I earned it with just 1/3 of my 29 hubs. Plus, I’ve written most of these “earning” hubs some time ago, so it’s nice to know that they provide passive income while I go about writing on other venues, managing MyMochaMoney, as well as a dozen other websites.
I just thought I’d share with you the topics that get people clicking the Adsense ads and clicking over to eBay (if you don’t know about eBay’s new Partner Network payment structure, click here. It’s more of a “quality click pricing” payment structure based on a ton of factors that no one seems to completely understand). Also, if you aren’t part of the eBay Partner Network now, click here for a resource that explains how to get accepted into their Network.
Anyway, the topics that seem to earn the most Adsense money, and get the most eBay clicks (at least in my experience) are the topics that discuss expensive, designer brand type items. For instance, my Rolex watch hubs as well as my David Yurman and authentic Coach bags hubs do really well. Now you wouldn’t be able to just copy my Rolex watch hubs (nor would you want to), but you could write a hub where you compare Rolex watches or other designer brand watches to other pricey watches. This could be done for many luxury items–just compare two different designer brand jeans or purses or skin care products. There are tons of designer items, and expensive products you can write about!
People especially like information that discusses how to get expensive items at a discount, and what better place to find designer items at a discount than on eBay?! In addition, the Adsense ads that tend to show up on these types of hubs–that is, hubs discussing how to get something expensive for less money, get a fair amount of clicks from my own experience (if you want to see all 29 of my hubs on Hubpages, click here).
I often think how much more money I could make on Hubpages by just publishing more hubs on the topics that produce good eBay click-thru-rates, and have a reasonable amount of success with Adsense. I write on Squidoo too and have had success there as well, but earning on Squidoo takes time (I’ll write more about my experience with Squidoo in the near future). I find that I can write faster on Hubpages, and attract traffic to my Hubs faster than on Squidoo, however, Hubpages is more strict than Squidoo in terms of promoting outside links such as those pointing to affiliate products.
I guess if I could crank out another fifty Hubs on Hubpages, following my own advice, I could make a nice little passive income from just that one outlet.
So why don’t I do it? Just too busy I guess. Any free moment I can find, I’ve been writing Squidoo lenses. I know I said sometimes it takes longer to start earning on Squidoo, but I can take my articles from my blog, do very little tweaking to them, and add them as Squidoo lenses. I can’t necessarily do that with HubPages; they are very strict in what they consider duplicate content. I then monetize them.
The great thing about writing for either Hubpages or Squidoo, is for very little investment of your time, you can try out different niches to see if they attract traffic. I was surprised to learn that my Small Face Painting Designs For Kids, and Stencils For Small Face Painting Designs lenses on Squidoo were as popular as they were. Once I found that out, I went ahead and created a blog, FacePaintingDesignsForKids.com, to be able to send the traffic to from Squidoo.
I added the affiliate program I’m promoting on my face painting Squidoo lenses to the face painting website, and as expected, my sales increased. So you never know where your writing can take you. The main point is, to just start writing!
You can sign up for Hubpages here. Try writing about designer items, or expensive items first like I discussed. Hopefully you are either already accepted by eBay’s Partner Network, or you don’t have too much trouble signing up. You will also need a Google Adsense account. If you don’t have a Google Adsense account, sign up here. In addition, you will need to sign up for any other affiliate program you want to promote or be a part of such as Amazon.com. See where your writing takes you. Hopefully, you’ll discover some great niche markets that make you some money!
