I know a lot of people discover my blog through my “Refurbs Rule! Best Refurbished Product Websites Revealed” post. This post lists places to buy refurbished products–mostly electronics–for discounted prices. But I also know that a lot of you are looking for places to sell your own used or refurbished electronics. Making some quick cash in the process is the ultimate goal!
One way to find out what refurbished products people are looking for is to check out the Google Insights page. Enter “refurbished” as your search term and set your filters to “Web Search,” “Worldwide,” “Last 90 Days (or whatever range you’d like),” and “All Categories.” Two types of searches will be returned: Top Searches and Rising Searches.
As of today, June 22, top Google searches for the search term, “refurbished,” included refurbished laptops, refurbished iPhones, and refurbished iPods. Rising searches for the same search term included refurbished iPads, refurbished AT&T phones, and refurbished Nikon d90 cameras.
So if you have one of the electronic products that people are looking for, then you can feel pretty confident that you can sell it. If the refurbished product you have to sell doesn’t appear on Google’s Insight top searches, or rising searches list, that doesn’t mean you can’t or won’t be able to sell it. The demand for your product just might not be as high as it is for some other more popular products such as any of the newer Apple products (I’m actually writing most of this post on my new Apple iPad!).
Now you need to go find out what people are willing to pay for your product. So even if you don’t plan on selling it through eBay or Amazon, they are great places to check to see what refurbished products are selling for.
First, go to eBay and sign in (sorry folks, I just assume everyone has an eBay account). You will need an eBay account to do an advanced search. If you do not have one, Click Here and sign up. It’s free! Next, click the “Advanced Search” link next to the search box. Enter the item you would like to sell, scroll down and click “Completed Listings.” You can now see what the product you want to sell has been selling for in the recent past. Be careful when comparing your item to the sold items. You want to make sure your item’s details are the same as the products being sold. For instance, if you have a 32 GB third generation iTouch to sell, make sure you are looking at completed listings for that same product.
After checking out eBay, you may want to go to Amazon and see what the prices are there for used electronics. Enter the name of your product into the search box. When the item listing appears, scroll down a bit until you see the number of “used” items available. Click on that link and you will be able to see the prices for which people are listing their items.
By researching your item on both eBay and Amazon, you will now have a good idea of the price for which your item can be sold. Now you just need to decide if it’s worth your time to sell it, and if it is, where you’re going to sell it. You can sell your products on Amazon (my favorite), eBay, or Craigslist, or at a garage sale, or through your local paper. Also, I recommend reading my post, “Turn Your Gadgets Into Cash And Help Save The Environment” to learn about another resource to help you turn your electronics into fast cash.
