Make Money Selling Your Hand Painted Items on eBay
Before Etsy, eBay was the premier place to make money selling your hand painted items. In fact, it still is a great marketplace to showcase your DIY products. What’s that? You can’t paint? And if you tried to paint your five-year-old would laugh at you? No worries! There’s a way to learn to paint fast and start selling your new (and fabulous looking) hand painted items on eBay for profit, and make extra money from home.
How To Get Started
Learn to paint! This is no joke. You’re going to need to learn to paint and learn to paint fast. I can’t think of any better method to learn to paint than Donna Dewberry’s One Stroke Method.
Learn the One Stroke Technique
Donna has a lot of books with VERY easy techniques that will make you look like an accomplished decorative painter in no time. I suggest getting one of her technique books first like Donna Dewberry’s Essential One-Stroke Painting Reference
After learning some of Donna Dewberry’s simple techniques, and getting some basic supplies like the One-Stroke Brush Set and FolkArt paints, I went out and found some things I could paint using the techniques I learned in the books. I was then able to sell those items on eBay for a nice profit. If you can find interesting things in your house to paint, or inexpensive thrift shop items, then the only cost to you is your time it takes to paint the item. Once you learn Donna’s techniques and practice them, you’ll be able to churn out project after project in no time!

A Skill That Keeps on Giving
Not only did I use my new painting techniques to sell items on eBay, I also painted items to give away as gifts. In addition, I painted centerpieces for my son’s Teacher Appreciation Lunch. My hand painted flower pot centerpieces with fresh flowers were given to a teacher at each table as a prize. The pictures are below. The painted pots were for the luncheon, and the tall tin bucket was given as a gift to a family member. People love receiving hand painted gifts. I’ve seen my flower pots in the teachers’ classrooms years later!
Hand Painted Items That You Can Make Money Selling on eBay
Once you have your One Stroke technique perfected, you’ll need to know what you can paint to resell on eBay. I put together a list below of hand painted items that you can make money selling on eBay. Like I mentioned before, you can find inexpensive items at thrift stores to paint. Also, flea markets and believe it or not…OPT (other people’s trash). In addition, you can get items for free if you go to Freecycle.org and join a group in your area. Craigslist is also a good way to find items people are giving away for free or inexpensively. In addition, you can look up garage sales in your area through Craigslist or your local newspaper.

Do Your Research
You’ll want to conduct your own research on eBay. Head over to eBay, and click on “Advanced Search” and put in the keywords, “hand painted” or “handpainted” (you can include “hp” as well) and the item you’re looking for like chair, pot, recipe box, etc. Then check the box “Sold Listings.” That way you’ll not only see how others have painted these items, but what has sold.
For instance, if items that are vintage and “shabby” and painted with pink roses (my favorite) seem to sell well, then you may want to paint pink roses on vintage, shabby items too! You’ll need an eBay account to do an Advanced Search. If you don’t have one, it’s free and you can get your eBay account here. You’re going to need an eBay account anyway if you plan on selling your items on eBay!
Experimenting with Your Own Style
Well, that should get you started to make money selling hand painted items on eBay! Once you have perfected the One Stroke technique, you’ll find how easy it is to experiment and come up with your own style of painting. One of my mother’s friends learned the Donna Dewberry One Stroke technique some time ago. I saw a card that she painted in watercolor that she gave my mother. It was so gorgeous that my mother framed it and put it on a prominent table in her beautifully decorated family room.
