By Gladys Edmunds–Opportunity doesn’t always knock. Sometimes you have to grab on to situations and turn them into opportunities.
Roda Ward Carter knows that better than anyone. As a child, her flair for designing and making beautiful clothes for her dolls led Roda to dream of being in the fashion world. After high school, Roda enrolled in New York’s famed Fashion Institute of Technology to study dress designing and landed a job as assistant fashion designer at a New York design house.
Roda approached life with two goals in mind: eventually owning her own business and helping other women to enter and advance in the fashion industry.
The work was hard, the pay was low, and her dream started to fade as she learned more about the intricacies and difficulties of the design business. One day while feeling despondent, Roda decided to visit the Prescriptives makeup counter at Macy’s, thinking that buying a tube of lipstick or the latest color in blush or eye shadow would soothe her spirit.
Roda’s perfectly applied makeup and well put together attire caught the attention of the woman behind the makeup counter who turned out to be a senior representative for the company.
